National Seminar on Survival Challenges of SCs and STs in Contemporary India

  Institute of Development Studies Jaipur

  Aug 08 to 09 Aug,2019

Theme and Objectives

Debates on STs and SCs  have traversed through different theoretical postulates from Isolation-Integration-Assimilation theory in the 1940s, to  the shift in paradigm  from what is to be done to what want to be done in the 21st century. The ongoing debates may also be reviewed in the present day context of dynamic movements of resistance of different origin, type and nature. The SCs and STs is comprised of diverse groups with varied asset structure, accessibilities to state apparatus and faces multiple forms of deprivations. However, the diversity of SCs and STs  in India is yet to be adequately addressed and it calls for an alternative narrative from the view point of their livelihood challenges. As accessibility to social provisions have been increasingly governed by the market under present economic dispensation, the socially and economically fragile sections find their basic rights to health, education and CPR at risk. Further, the discourse on the struggle for land, forest rights, growing  inequality and joblessness are issues demanding critical review and debate in the light of contemporary India. Against the backdrop, the Two Day national seminar on SCs and STs is aimed at addressing issues and challenges of survival of SCs and STs from perspectives transcending disciplinary boundaries. Although deliberations would primarily focus around following sub-themes, debates on extended themes would also be encouraged.
