Social Ventures and Innovative Entrepreneurial Solutions: An Exploratory Analysis

A large variety of ‘social’ ventures in terms of organizational forms and business models can be observed today. These range from grant based organizations with no profit motive to private capital backed ventures with high profit expectations. Activities of entrepreneurial ventures addressing social issues have taken three forms: (i) Substitute existing ventures by competing with them or fill an existing void; (ii) Supplement or complement existing entities by providing additional goods/services; and (iii) Enable or make more efficacious, the activities undertaken by existing entities. An analytical exploration of the combinations of entrepreneurial business models and nature of activities undertaken by start-ups in different sectoral contexts can provide insights about the emerging landscapes of social ventures.
